Job Accommodations
The following are examples of how employers can easily accommodate a person with a disability...
Fastening blocks under the legs of a work table or desk will raise it up to the needed height.
Speech
activated software can be purchased for many computer programs; i.e.: CAD/CAM,
Accounting Procedures.
Perhaps a workstation or desk area might be widened allowing easier access.
Using an adjustable keyboard tray could accommodate a person with a physical disability.
Foot controls could be changed to hand controls on machinery. (Or vice-versa)
If a person has difficulties remembering numerous instructions, assign tasks in smaller numbers.
Rearrange the work space of a person with a learning disability to eliminate visual distractions.
Colored marker tabs or large print numerical sequencing might be used to help organize files.
A video might be used instead of verbally teaching operating procedures of machinery or tools.
If a person has problems remembering schedules or routes, a time/day planner might be used.
Break a seemingly ‘overwhelming’ day’s tasks into
smaller structured tasks.
For persons with hearing problems, give instructions away from loud noises and fans.
Modify door handles and faucets from a round style to a lever style.
A local business can record daily/weekly specials on an answering machine.
Have most commonly used fasteners (nuts, bolts) on a rollable tray within reach of a worker.
Have the timers on automatic or elevator doors adjusted so there is more time before they close.
A person with a learning disability may have problems doing mental math. A wallet sized card can be made to list common fractions, decimals, or fractions of an inch on a ruler.
A person with shade/colour blindness dealing with filing cards that are colour coded can be given a numerical or alpha system written on top of the colour code for the price of a marking pen.
A person with a learning disability may need extra reinforcement while attending to their duties. A job coach could be given just to give them that little bit of confidence from time to time.
